Background
It has been five years since Stop AAPI Hate was founded and we are so proud of all that we have accomplished together. In 2024, we continued to take on anti-Asian and Pacific Islander hate and discrimination while scaling up our national programs to:
- Organized against racist, anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies — from land bans to racial profiling initiatives — under our Stop the Blame campaign
- Launched the first-ever State of Hate Annual Survey (with NORC at the University of Chicago), providing critical data and insights about AAPI communities
- Published groundbreaking research on the dual rise of South Asian political representation and anti-South Asian hate ahead of the presidential elections
- Joined forces with local advocates to demand police accountability for the death of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders facing mental health challenges
- Put a spotlight on affirmative stories of AA/PI strength, pride, resilience, and solidarity as part of our Spread AAPI Love storytelling campaign
- Activated thousands of AA/PI and allied supporters to fight Trump’s racist, anti-immigrant agenda in the aftermath of the 2024 presidential race
Highlights
Through community care, data and research, policy and advocacy, and strategic communications, our coalition has continued the fight for the civil rights and racial justice of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander communities nationwide. Here is a selection of the live events, groundbreaking projects, and hard-fought victories that made 2024 so impactful.
Project 2025 Analysis
We read all 900+ pages of Project 2025 and released a comprehensive analysis that warns of the impact of Project 2025 on AA/PI communities, which was later distributed to local, state, and federal lawmakers. A summary of our findings is now available in four languages.
From Pain to Power
In “From Pain to Power”, we combined reporting center data with key insights from the first annual State of Anti-AA/PI hate survey. The result put a spotlight on AAPI communities, including the various impacts of anti-AA/PI hate and key motivators for political action. More than 200 people attended our virtual briefing to learn about the report and its findings.
New York Post Advocacy
On July 13, 2024 the New York Post published a false story that misreported that a “Chinese man” was responsible for the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Together with community partners, we immediately demanded a formal retraction and apology, recognizing the real-life consequences of this misinformation.
Three days later, the paper issued a correction and apology.
Offenders and Defenders
Racist, anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies were rampant throughout this election season. Our monthly newsletter, “Offenders and Defenders,” rounded up the worst acts of anti-Asian scapegoating in U.S. politics—and the political leaders who called it out when it mattered most.
Radical Healing Pilot
In partnership with AAPI Equity Alliance, we launched a pilot program to foster healing and civic engagement among individuals in Southern California who have reported hate acts to Stop AAPI Hate. We plan to expand this program to other states.
