The Ban Will Threaten the Immigration Status of Millions of Asian, African, and Middle Eastern People in the U.S. and Around the World
NATIONWIDE – Stop AAPI Hate issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s Executive Order reviving an expanded travel ban against Asian, African, and Muslim-majority countries, including Afghanistan, Laos, Myanmar, and Turkmenistan — that will harm tens of thousands of legal immigrants. This statement can be attributed to Stop AAPI Hate Co-Founders Manjusha Kulkarni and Cynthia Choi:
“Stop AAPI Hate is outraged by the disgraceful, devastating and downright anti-American return of President Trump’s ‘Muslim ban’, which threatens to affect tens of thousands of immigrants and refugees from around the world.”
“Trump’s Travel Ban 2.0 is even more expansive than the original — banning travel from 12 Asian, African, and Middle Eastern countries and restricting travel from 7 others. And its impact will be even more extensive. In the coming days, weeks, and months, Trump’s travel ban will separate families, fuel racial and religious profiling, and deter people from seeking refuge from violence or persecution.”
“The Trump administration will have you believe this is about national security, but we know the truth. Much like Trump’s attacks on Chinese students and professors; his indiscriminate raids on schools, churches, and hospitals; and his reckless deportation of Venezuelan immigrants without due process, this travel ban is just another bald attempt to stoke fear and scapegoat immigrants.”
“Banning people based solely on the country they come from goes against the basic tenets of American democracy. And as an organization fighting to end discrimination against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, we know that this travel ban will bring harm to all communities of color — wherever they come from and whatever their immigration status.”
“Our recent report, Still Under Fire, confirms that anti-immigrant political rhetoric fueled anti-Asian racism and discrimination throughout the 2024 election season. And with Trump back in the White House and anti-immigrant policies on the rise — we can expect that this travel ban will fuel yet another wave of racism and xenophobia.”
“With so much on the line, Stop AAPI Hate is committed to organize alongside Asian American, Pacific Islander and other immigrant advocates mobilizing against Trump’s Travel Ban 2.0 and the rest of his racist and cold-blooded political agenda.”
“As a first step: we are calling on our elected leaders to pass the NO BAN Act (H.R. 924 /S. 398) which will keep this president — and all future presidents — from categorically banning people from entering the U.S. because of their religious faith or nationalities.”
