Coming out of the elections: Stop AAPI Hate November Newsletter

Ripped paper divider effect

It’s been a whirlwind of emotions for all of us at Stop AAPI Hate coming out of the election. There’s been much fear and anxiety around what a second Trump term means for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and all marginalized communities.

In thinking about how to move forward — as a coalition — we keep coming back to something cofounder, Cynthia Choi, said in our virtual town hall:

This is a time for us to strengthen our resolve. There will be an attempt to divide us and pick us off one by one, but this is the moment that we need to come together so that we can create a world where everyone can thrive.”

It’s going to take all of us working together to confront and defeat the threat that Trumpism presents to our rights, our democracy, and our safety.

Just as you can count us to keep fighting the good fight and defending AAPI communities over the next four years, we are counting on you to show up however and whenever you can. You can start by signing our pledge to stay up-to-date on petitions, protests, and other actions you can take to take a stand with us against Trump’s dangerous, divisive agenda.

Together, we can bring to life a brighter vision for the future of our country where everyone has equal opportunity to thrive.

Keep scrolling for this past month’s highlights from the coalition and from AAPI communities across the nation.

KEEPING UP WITH THE COALITION

Fighting the nonprofit killer bill: The House recently passed H.R. 9495 — the so-called “nonprofit killer” bill — which would let the Trump administration shut down nonprofits without due process. While this is not the outcome we hoped for, many of you took action with us to contact your representatives and your voices influenced dozens of House lawmakers to change their votes to oppose this undemocratic bill.

➡️ What’s next? The bill will need to get past the Senate, and Stop AAPI Hate will continue to oppose this dangerous legislation. Join our fight by signing our pledge. You’ll be notified of future actions you can take to stand up for our rights and our democracy.

Uniting our communities against Trumpism: Stop AAPI Hate held a virtual town hall last month, bringing together a panel of movement leaders, elected officials, and everyday people to discuss the threats of Trumpism to our communities and how AAPIs can mobilize against attempts to strip our rights and freedoms. Thank you to those who tuned in — as well as our panelists, including:

If you missed the town hall, we’ve got you covered. You can access the full town hall recording here

Preparing AAPI communities: We’ve heard many questions from concerned AAPIs across the country like: What’s at stake under the next Trump administration?; How can we protect ourselves and the people we love?; and How can we start to get involved in the fight against hate and Trumpism? We’ve got you covered. This blog is a one-stop-shop for resources including:

➡️ Analyses on the looming threats we will face under the Trump administration
➡️ Know your rights information for protestors, immigrants, and more
➡️ Multilingual fact-checking resources and detailed guidelines for confronting mis/disinformation
➡️ Actions that can help you prepare to defend against hate and stand up to Trumpism

0.2%

Despite making up 7% of the U.S. population, AAPI organizations receive less than 0.2% of philanthropic giving from foundations. That means nonprofits like Stop AAPI Hate rely heavily on support from everyday people to power our work to protect the rights of AAPIs, bring awareness to anti-AAPI racism, and advocate for policies that help us all thrive.

Whatever you can give, your contribution matters more than ever. Please consider donating to Stop AAPI Hate today to support the fight for the future of our communities.

KEEPING UP WITH THE COMMUNITY

📈 The rise of South Asian hate: With the increased visibility of prominent political figures such as Vice President Kamala Harris and Usha Vance comes a troubling rise in anti-South Asian hate across the nation. Our latest research showcases this connection, illustrating how Asian American representation in politics can bring about both progress and racist backlash.

🇰🇷Senator-elect Kim makes history: New Jersey Representative Andy Kim is the first Korean American to be elected to the U.S. Senate and is the first Asian American Senator from New Jersey.

🏙️ Protecting immigrant communities: Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted to designate LA as a sanctuary city — a move that will help protect immigrant Angelenos from mass deportations.

🌴 Maui wildfires, one year later: Maui residents affected by the 2023 wildfires are expressing their frustration with slow-moving fire prevention efforts. Community members are calling on the local government for immediate actions to address the extreme wildfire risks, such as clearing dry grasses, undergrounding utilities, and creating fire breaks.
