Community Care

Overview

For our coalition, “community care” is a framework that centers healing as a response to acts of harm and violence — both in the individual and institutional setting. Community care recognizes that healing is both a prerequisite for accountability and a critical foundation for preventing anti-AAPI hate.

The knee-jerk reaction to anti-AAPI hate has been to focus exclusively on increasing policing and punishment. At Stop AAPI Hate, we know from our research that this approach means there’s no accountability for the vast majority of hate incidents, which aren’t criminal. The exclusive focus on punishment also avoids the root causes of hate.

In order to achieve lasting systemic change, we need solutions that use a three pronged approach of prevention, accountability, and healing. By providing support to individuals and communities that have been harmed, building the crisis response infrastructure, and innovating approaches to healing we are investing in the resilience and resistance of our communities.

crisis response

We provide crisis response support to AAPI individuals, organizations, and communities that are directly impacted by acts of anti-AAPI hate. This includes providing resources, training, and network support when a crisis happens.

We coordinate with local leaders during times of crisis to help AAPI communities impacted from violence and hate. From Half Moon Bay, California to Allen Texas, we offered support to victims and survivors, created culturally competent mental health guides, organized and validated fundraisers, and provided media training and advocacy support to local organizations in need.

radical healing

We pilot and model an innovative approach to healing that focuses on fostering collective resilience and pride. Healing our People Through Engagement (HOPE) program is a 7-week virtual group for Asian/Asian Americans to reflect on experiences with racism, deepen their connection to identity, and build community. Through facilitated, interactive two-hour sessions, we help cultivate pride in AAPI heritage, share collective wisdom, and explore ways to take action—both individually and together.
