Advancing A Movement

This report looks back at the impact we have made in the three years after Stop AAPI Hate’s inception. It details how our coalition has evolved from a simple online form documenting individual acts of hate to a leading racial justice group advocating for systemic changes in pursuit of safer, more equitable communities across the nation.

About

Since 2020, Stop AAPI Hate has fought to bring mainstream visibility to anti-Asian and anti-Pacific Islander racism and discrimination. Leveraging data and research, policy work, advocacy campaigns, and strategic communications, our coalition has continued to shine a light on anti-AAPI hate and advocate for comprehensive solutions. In 2023, we continued this fight by confronting growing attacks on our civil rights and providing support to AAPI communities in Allen, Texas, Half Moon Bay, California and elsewhere.

Achievements

In 2023, the Stop AAPI Hate coalition achieved enormous impact. Together, we:

  • Released two major reports: “Righting Wrongs: How Civil Rights Can Protect Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders Against Racism” and “Shades of Hate.”
  • Developed an interactive data dashboard that allows easier access to and exploration of our reporting center data, which includes over 11,500 documented acts of hate.
  • Secured the passage of our Public Transit for All bill (SB 434) to improve safety on public transit. The law requires California’s top 10 public transit systems to collect feedback from riders about their experiences with harassment on trains, buses, and stations — which will then inform new solutions . SB 434 builds on the progress we made in 2022 when we secured the passage of two state laws (SB 1161 and AB 2448) through our No Place for Hate campaign.
  • Secured an additional $40 million of the API Equity Budget in California, which will bolster critical victim services, violence prevention efforts, and other initiatives aimed at fostering community safety.
  • Provided rapid-response support to the communities of Allen, TX; Monterey Park, CA; and Half Moon Bay, CA in the aftermath of tragic shootings impacting Asian American communities, including resources for the survivors and mobilization for long-term reforms.
  • Launched Stop the Blame, our national campaign in collaboration with Chinese for Affirmative Action to confront the ongoing surge of anti-Asian scapegoating in American politics. This includes issues such as racist political rhetoric, xenophobic land ownership bans across dozens of states, and warrantless government surveillance measures that fuel racial profiling of everyday Asian Americans and immigrants.
